Story of Stuff (Essay 2)

Introduction

Have you ever wondered where do your old stuff end? Well, in this essay you'll learn about how it was produced and where it ends up being. A major problem facing our environment nowadays is the consumption of a lot materials and not using the resources to reuse the consumables.

Extraction

The resources used to make things does not come from nowhere, they come from many elements in the environment. The process of extraction affects our environment in a very bad way. The environment has many resources such as metals, trees, animals, water, and many more. The problem with this process is that we are using up much of the environment without doing anything to compensate of what we used. “Mining pollutes the water of surrounding communities through cyanide contaminated waste ore and other abandoned mine waste” (Where’s The Harm? 2013). Something must be done towards this issue or eventually our resources will inevitably come to an end. Humans are using up these sources at such a fast rate that, in the future the next generations will not have many resources to work with.

Production

After the resources have been extracted they move on to production. In the process of production many toxic chemicals are added to the materials in production, producing a toxic product. These products we use in our lives on daily bases which may harm our bodies or if not our environments. Some of the products are not even tested for how the chemicals used in them will react to chemicals we interact with daily. There are other issues too, where it even affects infants. The milk used to breast feed babies is contaminated too. It is not about not using chemicals in production, it is more about using the right ones which will not affect us or the environment in a bad way.

Distribution

Now that stuff have been extracted and then put to production, they are ready to go to distribution. This is where the products made go out for the people. With distribution it is important to keep selling the products as soon as they come. Doing this requires a lot of steps which include having low prices, and having low salaries for the people working. See in this process people are not actually buying the things for their price, they're buying with the cost of other people's lives and environments, which are used to make these things and put them into distribution.

Consumption

This part of the whole system is what the extraction, production, and distribution leads to. It is not a problem to buy a lot of products, but the problem is in buying things we don't need. When the products are distributed are they all sold? No, and this is a huge issue. This means that using up all these resources will go to waste and we're just destroying our planet. People have been molded to a mindset which makes them crave more stuff and makes them want to buy thing not because they need them, but just because they want to and have the means to do so. “Increasing consumption and a developing economy continue to generate large amounts of waste” (Waste and Material Resources 2012). We as humans must evolve our way of consumption to moderate the rate that things are used at.

Disposal

Now this is the final step of the whole process. Disposal is getting rid of the unused stuff, junk, in a way that will harm our environment. The way things are disposed of results in massive air pollution because of the amount of toxins released due to incineration. "Garbage pollution is main cause of various bacterial diseases and gastro is one of them." (Muba, M. 2012). Not only does it affect the environment but it also affects our health. There should be awareness in the garbage disposal and its consequences, and people must learn more about recycling. Recycling garbage allows us to reuse the stuff we want without using the resources of the environment.

Consumption in the UAE

Here in the UAE, the people are blessed with a lot of money. Of course with a lot of money it must go towards something. It can be seen in the cars people drive, houses people live in, clothes people wear, and many more aspects. From personal experience, people in the UAE spend a lot of money on food that goes to waste. Many families buy food more than what they can consume because Arabs are known for generosity and they would always want to serve the best for their guests. Now statistics have shown that "UAE people have emerged as the world’s largest water consumers" (Staff 2011). There should be awareness regarding the huge consumption in the UAE as it harms our environment and don't really benefit us in any way.

Conclusion

To conclude, I think that we as residents of this planet should do our best to conserve what we have. The nature is not ours to destroy, we can use thing to a limit but not exploit the resources of the environment. People around the world should be more aware of the problems that affect the environment and the planet as a whole as a result of what they do to it.

3D Technology (Essay 1)

CJG Omar Mohamed Balfaqeeh

3D Technology
What is 3D technology? Well, it is basically seeing motion pictures on screens in a 3 dimensional state. This technology has revolutionized how we watch movies, TV, video games. This technology has multiple uses in which helps in many different ways. To have a 3D image it has to have height, width and depth. The beginning of the 3D technology can be traced way back to 1844, where David Brewster could take 3D images with his invention the Stereoscope. With further development the stereoscope was used widely throughout the world. With further developments to the idea the first public 3D movie was produced in the year 1922. "The late 1920s to early 1930s saw little to no interest in stereoscopic pictures" (3D Film Wikipedia). However it was in the year 1935 that the production of a color 3D movie have taken place. In the years that followed there was not as many developments in the 3D technology due to the wide spread of the TV in at the time.
The "Golden Era" of the 3D technology was in the 1950s. In this time the industry bloomed and was beginning tomspread even more than before. In the 1950s the there were many 3D movies being made, however, not all of the movie theatres had the capabilities to screen 3D movies. The year 1952 witnessed "the release of the first color stereoscopic feature" (3D Film Wikipedia). Most of the major production companies started releasing 3D movies which were getting a lot of recognition. Although the 3D films were a huge hit, the business started to decline during August and September of the year 1953. Many reasons led to that decline. One of which was that to view a 3D film the two cameras being used to screen the film must be in sync, and if one of them was out of sync the film was not suitable to watch. Nevertheless 3D films made a comeback in December of the same year with major movie oroductions. But still yet again the industry suffered severe setbacks in the spring of 1954 due to the same issues faced before.
The 1960s witnessed the release of Space-Vision 3D a new 3D technology which was not like the technologies before because "it required a single projector with a special lens" (Enciso, W. 2010). This technology was much easier to use because it only needed one camera and not two. In the 1970s the Stereovision was invented. This new technology was used for years coming but it it's quality was not far better than the previous versions. In the mid 1980s grew to new heights as IMAX started producing many non-fiction movies in 3D. Then going on in the 1990s numerous 3D were being made, of which was the huge hit "Into The Deep". "Wings of Courage" was the first fiction movie of the IMAX 3D. During this time and in the new millennium IMAX 3D theaters were gaining big likings. "By 2004, 54% of IMAX theatres were capable of showing 3D films" (3D Film Wikipedia). From the beginning of the 2000s until now there were huge developments in the 3D industry. Today we have many 3D TVs and video games. 3D technology took a new step towards being the most popular way to watch anything and hand held gaming consoles began to have the same thing. It is amazing to see how over the years the technology developed from mere pictures to the big things it is right now, fighting through ups and downs but eventually adapting and becoming a very big thing in our lives.

Summary 2

LSC 1103  - CJG Omar Mohamed Omar
Houbara Bustards Summary

The houbara bustards are a North African endangered bird species. Their numbers have decreased significantly in a few decades due to hunting and the destruction of their habitats. The Abu Dhabi Government are financing a Wildlife Propagation center in Morocco which preserves and produce these birds. The centre has some "plans to expand the release efforts to 15,000 birds per season..." (Todorova, V. 2011). During spring which is the breeding seasAreopagus to 600 sperm samples are produced, which are then tested according to standards. The eggs hatch after 24 days from being laid, of which 10% will be used for breeding and the rest will be set in the wild. Chicks are released in two batches in wide areas in eastern and southern Morocco, except in the hunting season in autumn. Scientists monitor the birds regularly whom after a year of their release only 65% of them survive.

Summary 1

LSC 1103 - CJG Omar Mohamed Omar
Preserving Emirati Traditions

According to students, academics, and experts it is important to preserve the traditional Emirati sports in order to protect the national identity of the
UAE. It is important to spread awareness of traditional lifestyle, between the youth, and the traditional sports like falconry and Arabian Saluki hunting.
Schools and universities take part of the blame in the lack of awareness in those traditions. It is vital to educate the young Emiratis about the past
because it represents the national identity. Young Emiratis of today will forget all about there tradition, unless their parents or schools educated them
about it. They must learn that in the past these traditional sports were a part of survival. Once there is a focus on heritage and tradition it will never be
forgotten, and there will always be someone who will carry it on.
